Well, it was nice while it lasted. After two years of limited and inconsistent releases, Bandai Japan finally got the One Piece Figuarts Zero line back on track with the monthly 5th Anniversary Series of figures, with one newly-sculpted figure being released each month for the latter half of 2015. I had hoped that the 5th Anniversary might be a “rolling” anniversary year and we’d see another six figures in 2016, but alas. Bandai Tamashii Nations has confirmed the sixth release in the lineup will be the final entry. Luckily, it’s a blockbuster–the One Piece Figuarts Zero 5th Anniversary Luffy & Law figure is now up for order!
So it seems only fitting that the 5th Anniversary FAZ line come to an end with a recreation of these iconic (and recent) team-up, giving the spotlight to One Piece’s main character and a side character whose popularity is off the charts!
When Bandai first debuted this statue at an event a few months ago, my jaw literally dropped. I genuinely thought that this was some sort of one-of-a-kind statue that Bandai Japan had developed specifically to show off at the event, and not something that they were actually planning on mass producing.
The sculpting, paint deco and effects pieces added onto this statue are some of the best work that Bandai has literally ever done with the FAZ One Piece line, and I wasn’t sure that they were up to the task of manufacturing it on a large scale.
But as it turns out, that is exactly what Bandai is doing as their final 5th Anniversary Figuarts Zero One Piece entry! What’s even better is that this beautiful figure is a mass release item and not a limited Tamashii Web exclusive, meaning that fans and collectors in the United States will be able to secure one easily through stores who purchase from Bluefin Distribution. Thanks, Bandai!
The Monkey D. Luffy figure in this set harkens back to the immensely popular first Monkey D. Luffy Battle Ver. figure that was released way back in 2013 and remains one of the line’s top-selling figures. But while that Luffy was enraged, this one has a characteristic grin on his face and his awesome Dressrosa “Lucy” sunflower shirt.
Meanwhile, this is the best-looking action-posed version of Trafalgar Law that has been released thus far by any company, as Law’s Punk Hazard Battle Ver. figure ended up being ultimately disappointing.
That makes this the single most-expensive Figuarts Zero figure ever released in North America, but considering this is the first-ever statue of two full characters on one base–and it’s a masterpiece–I don’t mind dropping my eighty-something dollars for what may turn out to be the last Bandai One Piece statue ever released.
The 5th Anniversary Figuarts Zero Monkey D. Luffy & Trafalgar Law statue is now available for order, and is scheduled to be released in December 2015/January 2016. Because of the size and price of this statue, I don’t expect a lot of these to be made, so this is another instance where pre-ordering is a virtue. Remember: it’s better to have a pre-order you don’t want and end up canceling than it is to not a have a pre-order for a sold-out item and wish that you did!
What do you think of this (amazing) Monkey D. Luffy and Trafalgar Law Figuarts Zero 5th Anniversary figure, One Piece collectors? Will you be putting down the big bucks for this statue, or is it too rich for your blood? If this were the final One Piece Figuarts Zero figure ever released, would you be okay with that?
